Peripheral neuropathy means abnormal nerve function effecting hands or feet, most commonly feet. Common causes can be diabetic neuropathy, chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, idiopathic neuropathy or medication-induced neuropathy.

Central neuropathy focuses on neuropathy from the central nervous system such as Parkinson's or other brain disorders.

Hecker Sports Medicine focuses on peripheral neuropathies.

Symptoms Neuropathy

  • Burning, tingling numbness
  • Exacerbated in the evening or with exercise
  • Discomfort with shoe wear
  • Discoloration and dryness of the skin of the foot or ankle
  • Excessive sweating of feet

Typical Treatments

  • Medications
  • Gabapentin (often with side effects)
  • Physical Therapy
  • Topical creams

Do I need Surgery?

Surgery is sometimes suggested to decompress nerve outlets to help relieve pain. Many patients have limited relief because peripehral neuropathy is more of a systemic condition. Surgery addresses only the local symptoms.

Advanced Therapy Treatments Neuropathy

We offer inexpensive, safe, effective treatment for peripheral neuropathy.

Peripheral neuropathy is most commonly a nutritional deficit of folate.

Studies have shown high prevalence of metabolic deficiency of folate caused by genetic change of key enzymes that metabolize folate (MTHFR). This genetically induced nutritional deficit of folate has been shown to be a systemic cause of peripheral neuropathy. Testing for MTHFR, as well as metabolism of vitamin B12, identifies if nutritional deficit is present which is a cause of systemic neuropathies. If MTHFR is positive, proving a nutritional deficiency of folate, then supplementation with medical foods for peripheral neuropathy has proven highly effective.

The advance treatment modalities at Hecker Sports Medicine also improve recovery from peripheral neuropathy, in conjunction with medical food supplementation.

  • Sanexas electric cell therapy
